Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) endoribonuclease playing acentral role in short dsRNA-mediated post-transcriptional genesilencing. Cleaves naturally occurring long dsRNAs and short hairpinpre-microRNAs (miRNA) into fragments of twenty-one to twenty-threenucleotides with 3' overhang of two nucleotides, producing respectivelyshort interfering RNAs (siRNA) and mature microRNAs. SiRNAs and miRNAsserve as guide to direct the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) tocomplementary RNAs to degrade them or prevent their translation. Genesilencing mediated by siRNAs, also called RNA interference, controlsthe elimination of transcripts from mobile and repetitive DNA elementsof the genome but also the degradation of exogenous RNA of viral originfor instance. The miRNA pathway on the other side is a mean tospecifically regulate the expression of target genes. [1-9]
